Bridges to the new

You may have come to this page because you have a card deck called “Bridges to the New” and you want to find out more about how to use these cards. Or perhaps you are interested in buying a deck of these cards.

They were created in early 2022 as a part of the Gratitude project which I developed to give thanks to all those who have helped me in my role leading the organisation I founded in 2013 called NHS Research & Development North West. As I stepped down as Chief Executive after 9 years I wanted to produce a series of projects that would form a part of the overall Gratitude series. This first project derived its name from the change programme that we developed to work through the transition as I took my final year to find my successor and ensure the stability for the team to continue into the future. The programme was called The Bridge to the New.

I was keen to make a play on the name William Bridges, as we were using his work on Transitions to support our programme. As the programme evolved I spent several months taking photos of bridges that I came across. It seemed the right thing to do, even though I wasn’t sure what the purpose of the photos.

All became clear as 2022 began and I kept waking in the night with ideas for a deck of cards, each one featuring a bridge photo – and these photos would serve as the inspiration for a key question that would be a helpful prompt when developing new work.

Essentially then, this was to be the first legacy project; the first artefact that I would leave behind for others to use.
